Jade: Considered the most precious of all stones in ancient Egypt and even now in Japan and the Orient. It is credited with five qualities: clarity, courage, justice, wisdom, and modesty. It is folklored to evoke tranquility, so much so that even holding Jade in your hand may cause a feeling of serenity or wisdom. Consequently, it also said to help to the smooth transition to the next world and aids in peaceful death and dream yoga. Jade provides protection from from enemies and during long journeys.
Serpentine: Associated with the Fourth Chakra, the Heart Chakra. It can aid recovery from emotional trauma. Serpentine helps awareness of the heart’s needs and the ability to express love.
PURPOSE OF MALA BEADS:
Traditionally, the beads are used during meditation. In the process of quieting your mind, complete concentration may not come easily at first. Mala prayer beads help you keep your focus while chanting mantras. A "mantra” is somewhat similar to words of affirmation. You can say an encouraging phrase or series of phrases to connect you to either your higher self, or higher power. Hold the beads in your left hand and feel their energy as you meditate. Beginning after the previously mentioned guru bead, move your fingers along the string after each chant until you’ve completed the circle. Once you’re finished, you should feel connected. Enlightened. Free.
A "mala” is a string of 108 beads, including a "guru bead”, which is noticeably different from the others. The traditional malas have 108 beads, the number of beads can vary depending upon the particular sect of Buddhism, the guru beads and markers are not included in the 108 beads. People often ask why 108? Well the most commonly stated and accepted reason is as follows: 1 represents the Source, the higher truth or the universe, 0 stands for humbleness, emptiness, and the willingness to learn. Finally the number 8 is related with infinity, eternity and timelessness.
So why are there 108 beads specifically on a mala? In ancient Vedic tradition, 108 was the number of existence itself. This sacred number is seen all over Indian culture, from 108 sacred yogic texts to 108 sacred sites throughout the country, and 108 marma points (or sacred sites within the body). Highly attuned to the chakra system, the ancient Vedics also identified 108 lines of energy converging into the heart chakra.
108 beads is said to represent the following formula: 6 x 3 x 2 x3 = 108 6 senses of a human being: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch, thought 3 times: past, present, future 2 conditions of heart, mind or intention: pure or impure 3 disturbing emotional states or "kleshia”: like, dislike, indifference.
On an even larger scale, the Vedics calculated the Sun’s diameter to be precisely 108 times that of the Earth’s diameter, expanding the sacredness of this number vastly into the universal realm. And it wasn’t just the Vedics who identified this sacred number; in Islam, the number 108 refers to God, and in Judaism, 108 is related to the word "chai”, meaning "life”.
